Glossary
The core techniques and concepts, each linked to everywhere we explain it.
Backbeat
26The snare accent on beats 2 and 4 that drives most rock and pop music — the heartbeat of a basic groove.
Drum rudiment
26A foundational sticking pattern (singles, doubles, paradiddles and more) that builds the vocabulary of hand technique.
Paradiddle
8A core rudiment with the sticking R-L-R-R / L-R-L-L, used to develop hand control, accents and smooth transitions around the kit.
Flam
7A rudiment where a quiet grace note lands just before a main stroke, thickening a hit — a building block of many fills.
Ghost note
5A very soft, often unaccented snare note played between the backbeats to add groove, feel and dynamics.
Single-stroke roll
5The most basic rudiment — strictly alternating strokes (R-L-R-L) — that underpins fills, speed and evenness between the hands.
Double-stroke roll
3A rudiment of two strokes per hand (R-R-L-L) that trains rebound control and is the basis of the buzz/press roll.
Moeller method
3A whipping-motion technique that uses arm and wrist to play accents and multiple notes efficiently, reducing effort and fatigue.
