For an e-kit or for playing along to songs, look for closed-back, wired headphones with solid isolation. Closed-back cups block outside sound so you can hear the module or the song clearly over the mechanical clack of the pads, and a wired connection avoids the small delay that wireless audio can add. Comfort matters too, since you'll likely wear them for 30 minutes or more at a time. Beyond that, you don't need anything fancy or drum-specific — general-purpose closed-back headphones work fine.
Why headphones do more work on an e-kit
On an acoustic kit, the drums themselves are loud enough that you don't need headphones to hear yourself play. An electronic drum set is different — the pads make a quiet rubber-and-plastic tapping sound, and the actual drum and cymbal sounds only exist inside the module, routed to your headphones or an amp. If your headphones don't isolate well, that tapping and any room noise can drown out the sound you're supposed to be playing to, which makes it hard to judge your own dynamics or timing.
The same logic applies to play-along practice on an acoustic kit: you're trying to hear a song over real drum volume, so isolation is what lets you actually follow the music instead of guessing at it.
Closed-back vs open-back
Closed-back headphones seal around your ear and keep sound in (and outside noise out). Open-back headphones have vented ear cups that leak sound both ways — they're built for casual or studio listening in a quiet room, not for playing over pad noise or blocking a loud room. For drumming, closed-back is the practical choice.
Wired vs wireless
Wired headphones plug straight into the module or your phone, so what you hear lines up with what you play. Wireless headphones add a processing step to send audio over Bluetooth, and that step takes a small amount of time. When you're trying to lock into a groove, even a slight gap between hitting the pad and hearing the sound can throw off your sense of timing. A cheap wired pair will serve you better here than an expensive wireless one.
Impedance and volume
Headphone impedance affects how loud they get with a given power source. Some electronic drum modules are made to drive higher-impedance headphones and won't get very loud with headphones designed for a phone, while the reverse can distort or overdrive a low-power source. If a pair sounds unexpectedly quiet or thin plugged into your module, impedance mismatch is one thing worth checking. Comfort for long sessions
You'll likely have these on for a while, so weight, clamping pressure, and cushion material matter more than a spec sheet suggests. Over-ear cups that fully surround your ear tend to be more comfortable over time than on-ear designs that rest directly on the ear.
What doesn't matter as much
You don't need studio-reference sound quality, wireless range, active noise cancellation, or a drum-branded product to practice well. Marketing aside, a plain closed-back wired pair with decent isolation and a comfortable fit covers what you actually need at this stage.
Mixing module sound with play-along music
Many electronic drum modules have an aux input so you can plug in a phone or MP3 player and blend the song with your kit sound in the same headphones. If your module doesn't have this, a simple headphone splitter or a small mixer can combine both sources. Either way, the goal is the same: hear the song and your own playing together, at a volume where neither one buries the other.
When you can skip dedicated headphones
If you're practicing on a practice pad rather than a full e-kit, you don't need headphones at all — pads are quiet enough on their own, and you can play along to a song through regular speakers. And if you play an acoustic kit and just want to protect your hearing rather than isolate music, ear plugs are the better tool for that job, not headphones.
